Have you ever seen a baby learn to walk? It is the ultimate example of determination, persistence, and growth.
SEE MORE THAN THE END RESULT
Babies walk from one adult to another adult seated across the floor. But, most of the time they do not make it all the way without falling. But, with each attempt she gets one step better.
Even though she fell and did not reach the desired result, everyone praises her progression. Everyone notices improvement and nourishes it.
BRAVE ENOUGH TO FAIL
The baby does not cower away from trying because people are watching. She is courageous enough to fail in front of a crowd because her instincts tell her that is the only way to grow.
Failure is certain, but she is courageous.
I always tell my athletes to take a deep breath and admit to themselves that failure is certain, unavoidable, and guaranteed. Stop surrendering to it, accept it and keep fighting.
SACRIFICE SAFETY FOR IMPROVEMENT
The baby is safe in her mother’s lap, but she would rather expand her ability. She desires growing to the next level so much that she risks falling.
She wants more out of her stationary life and is willing to do whatever it takes. The bruises and cuts from crashing into the floor is a price she is willing to pay.
SURROUND YOURSELF WITH SUPPORT
As the baby falls, gets back up, fights on and continues to grow and improve, the room cheers her on. This support reinforces the baby’s grit. It reassures her that it's OK to fail and keep pushing.
But, if they baby was yelled at and criticized for making mistakes, she would cling to safety and her growth would halt. Which is what we see with many people today, they've buried their instincts.
